Sustainable Development in Whitstable

New life for a much-loved house by the sea.

— 2 minute read

Our project to fully renovate and extend a detached family house in Whitstable, Kent is now complete.

Our client wanted to increase the size of the existing detached single story house. We looked into the idea of demolishing it and building a new, bigger one in its place. However, we decided that improving the existing house and then extending it would be a more sustainable and in the end, more interesting and appropriate way to go about the project.

Recent changes in the building regulations have resulted in the requirement for increased levels of insulation in walls, floors and roofs, which is a good thing and we worked closely with the main contractor and the approved inspector for building control to make sure that we delivered the most sustainable project that we could.

There are many different types of external wall and roof constructions in this project and each type required a separate analysis and design to ensure that the amount of insulation and the location of the insulation within the construction was correct.

The landscaping around the extended building was completely re-worked and we really like the way that the spaces around the building work with the overall garden design.

We worked very closely with our clients on this project to develop the design and our clients led the way in many aspects of the final look and feel of the project.

The design and construction team on this project were:

Architects – Douglas Architects Limited

Structural Engineer – ABC House and Extensions Calculation Limited

Approved Inspectors for Building Control – Vantage Building Control

Landscape Design – The Garden Creative

Main Contractor – ECN Building Services Limited
